Herbert George Wells (1866-1946), a famous English writer, was best known for his science fictions. His most notable science fictions include The Time Machine, The Invisible Man etc. Wells also wrote many short stories. One of his best-known short stories is The Country of the Blind. The Shop That Never Was is an adaptation from his famous short story The Magic Shop.

I had seen the Magic Shop from afar several times. I had passed it once or twice, but never had I thought of going in. One day, my son, Gip dragged me up to the shop. There was such keenness in him that I was forced to get in.
আমি বেশ কয়েকবার ম্যাজিকের দোকানটা দূর থেকে দেখেছি। একবার কি দুবার আমি এটার ওপর দিয়েও গেছি কিন্তু ঢোকার কথা কখনো ভাবিনি। একদিন, আমার ছেলে, জিপ আমাকে দোকানটায় টেনে নিয়ে গেল। তার এতই আগ্রহ ছিল যে আমি তার মধ্যে যেতে বাধ্য হয়েছিলাম।
It was a little narrow shop, not very well lit. On the shop counter, there were several crystal balls. On the floor, there were magic mirrors: one to draw you out long and thin and one to make you short and fat. While we were laughing at all these, the shopman appeared.
এটা একটা ছোটো সরু দোকান, খুব একটা আলোকিত নয়। দোকানের কাউন্টারে বেশ অনেকগুলি কাচের বল ঝুলছিল। মেঝেতে ছিল কতগুলি যাদু আয়না : কোনো একটিতে তোমাকে লম্বা ও রোগা দেখাবে আর কোনোটিতে তোমাকে বেঁটে ও মোটা দেখাবে। আমরা যখন এগুলো দেখে হাসছিলাম, দোকানদার এসে উপস্থিত হল।
"How can I help you?" said he.
সে বলল, “আমি কীভাবে আপনাদের সাহায্য করতে পারি?”
"I want to buy my little boy a few simple tricks," I said.
আমি বললাম, “আমি আমার এই ছোটো ছেলেটাকে কয়েকটি সাধারণ কৌশল কিনে দিতে চাই।”
"Uml" said the shopman, and scratched his head for a moment, as if thinking.Then he drew from his hair a glass ball and said, "Something like this?" and held it out.The action was unexpected. I had seen the trick done at magic shows, but I had not expected it here.
দোকানদার বলল, “হুম” আর এক মুহূর্তের জন্য মাথা চুলকাতে থাকল, যেন সে ভাবছে। তারপর সে তার চুল থেকে একটা কাচের বল বের করে বলল, “এইরকম কিছু?” এবং আমাদের দিকে ধরল। এই কাজটা অপ্রত্যাশিত ছিল। আমি যাদু প্রদর্শনের অনুষ্ঠানে কৌশলটা দেখেছিলাম, কিন্তু এখানে আমি তা আশা করিনি।
"That's good", I said with a laugh.

"Isn't it?" said the shopman.

Gip stretched out his hand to take this object and found merely a blank palm.

"It's in your pocket," said the shopman, and there it was.

"How much does it cost ?"l asked.

"There is no charge for glass balls," said the shopman politely. "We get them free." He drew a business card from his cheek and handed it to me. "Genuine Magic Goods, sir,"he said.

He now turned towards Gip with a friendly smile and said, "You wanted a magic box, didn't you?"
এবার তিনি জিপের দিকে হাসিমুখে তাকিয়ে বললেন, “তুমি একটা যাদু বাক্স চাও, তাই না?”
"Yes," Gip said.
জিপ বলল, “হ্যাঁ”।
"It's in your pocket," he said.Gip discovered the box with surprise. Then the shop man quickly went behind the counter and was absent for a while.
তিনি বললেন, “এটা তোমার পকেটেই আছে।” জিপ অবাক হয়ে নিজের পকেটে এটাকে খুঁজে পেল। এরপর তিনি দ্রুত কাউন্টারের পিছনে চলে গেলেন ও কিছুক্ষণের জন্য অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেলেন।
"Let's look behind the counter, Gip," I said. "He's making fun of us."
আমি বললাম, “জিপ, কাউন্টারের পিছনে দেখা যাক।
Just then, he appeared again from a dark corner of the room. "You'd like to see our showroom, Sir?" said he. Gip tugged my finger forward.
তিনি নিশ্চয়ই আমাদের নিয়ে মজা করছেন।” ঠিক সেই সময়ই, তিনি ঘরের একটা অন্ধকার কোণ থেকে দৃশ্যমান হলেন। তিনি বললেন, “মহাশয়, আপনি আমাদের দোকানটা দেখতে চান?” জিপ আমার আঙুলটা তার দিকে টেনে ধরল।
In the showroom, there were many things that Gip fancied. He turned to this astonishing man with respect."Is that a magic sword?" he said.
দোকানে অনেক জিনিসই ছিল যা জিপ চাইছিল। সে এই অদ্ভুত লোকটির দিকে শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে ফিরে তাকাল ও জিজ্ঞেস করল, “ওটা কি একটা যাদু তলোয়ার?”
"A Magic Toy Sword-this is a unique one! It neither bends, breaks, nor cuts the fingers," replied the shopman. I tried to find out what they cost, but the shopman did not pay attention to me. He had got Gip now. I saw, with a feeling of distrust, that Gip was holding this person's finger as usually he held mine.
দোকানি উত্তর দিলেন, “একটা যাদুর খেলনা তলোয়ার—একটা অনুপম জিনিস! এটা না বেঁকে যায়, ভেঙে যায়, না তো এতে হাত কেটে যায়।” ওটার কত দাম তা আমি জানতে চেষ্টা করলাম, কিন্তু দোকানি আমার দিকে কোনো মনোযোগই দিলেন না। তিনি এখন জিপকে ধরেছেন। আমি অবিশ্বাস নিয়ে দেখলাম, সাধারণত যেভাবে জিপ আমার হাত ধরে থাকে, সেইভাবেই জিপ এই লোকটির হাত ধরে আছে।
The shopman showed Gip magic-trains that ran without steam, clockwork and a box of soldiers that all came alive when one said a magic word. "You've never seen such a one!" said the shopman. "You'll take that box?"
দোকানদার জিপকে একটা যাদু-রেলগাড়ি দেখালেন যেটা বাষ্প ছাড়াই চলে, একটা ঘড়ির কল আর এক বাক্স সৈন্য যারা জীবন্ত হয়ে ওঠে যখন কেউ একটা যাদুর শব্দ বলে। তিনি বললেন, “এরকম তুমি কখনো দেখনি ! তুমি নেবে এটা?”
"We'll take that box," I said.
আমি বললাম, “আমরা বাক্সটা নেবো।”
And the shopman swept the soldiers back again, shut the lid, and waved the box in the air. And there it was, in brown paper, tied up and with Gip's full name and address on the paper. He laughed at my amazement.
এবং দোকানদার সবকটি সৈন্যকে বাক্সে ঢুকিয়ে, ঢাকনা বন্ধ করে বাতাসে বাক্সটাকে একটু নাড়ালেন। এবং সেটা খয়েরি কাগজে মুড়ে বাঁধা হয়ে গেল এবং ওপরে জিপের পুরো নাম ও ঠিকানাও লেখা ছিল। তিনি আমার অবাক হওয়া দেখে হাসছিলেন।
I felt very uneasy and began to look for the way out. Turning to Gip, I saw him standing on a stool. The shopman was holding a big drum in his hand.
আমি খুবই অস্বস্তি বোধ করছিলাম ও বেরোবার উপায় খুঁজছিলাম। জিপের দিকে ফিরে আমি দেখলাম; ও একটা টুলের ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। দোকানদার হাতে একটা বড়ো ড্রাম নিয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছেন।
"We're playing hide and seek, daddy!" cried Gip.
জিপ চেঁচিয়ে বলল, “বাবা! আমরা এখন লুকোচুরি খেলছি।
And before I could prevent him, the shopman had put the big drum over him. "Take that off," I cried, "this instant. You'll frighten the boy."
এবং আমি বাধা দেওয়ার আগেই তিনি বড়ো ড্রামটা জিপের ওপর দিয়ে দিলেন। আমি চিৎকার করে উঠলাম, “এক্ষুনি ওটা তোলো। তুমি ছেলেটিকে ভয় পাইয়ে দেবে।”
The shopman did so without a word. He held the big drum towards me to show its emptiness. The stool was empty, too. My boy had disappeared!
দোকানদার একটি কথাও না বলে তাই করলেন। বড়ো ড্রামটা তুলে দেখালেন ভিতরের ফাঁকাটা। টুলটাও খালি ছিল। আমার ছেলেটা অদৃশ্য হয়ে গিয়েছিল।
"Where is my boy?" I said.
আমি বললাম, “আমার ছেলে কোথায়?
"You see," he said, displaying the drum's interior, "this is genuine magic !"
তিনি ড্রামের ভিতরটা দেখিয়ে বললেন, “তুমিই দেখ এটাই আসল যাদু !”
I jumped at him and fell into utter darkness.
আমি তাঁর দিকে লাফিয়ে গেলাম কিন্তু পুরো অন্ধকারের মধ্যে গিয়ে পড়লাম।

"Sorry, Sir, I didn't see you coming, "someone said. I saw I was in Regent Street and I had collided with a man, and a yard away was Gip. He was carrying four parcels in his arm. He smiled at me. He did not look scared.
কেউ একজন বলল, “দুঃখিত মহাশয়, আমি আপনাকে আসতে দেখতে পাইনি। আমি দেখলাম আমি রিজেন্ট স্ট্রিটে রয়েছি এবং একজন লোকের সঙ্গে ধাক্কা খেয়েছি ও আমার এক হাত দূরেই জিপ। ওর হাতে রয়েছে চারটে মোড়ক। ও আমাকে দেখে হাসল। ওকে একটুও ভীত দেখাচ্ছিল না।
For a second I was at a loss. I stared round to see the door of the magic shop. It was not there. There was no door, no shop, nothing. I did the only thing possible in that mental state. I called for a cab.
এক মুহূর্তের জন্য আমি বোধশূন্য হয়ে গেছিলাম । আমি যাদুর দোকানের দরজাটা দেখার জন্য ঘুরলাম। কিন্তু সেটা ওখানে ছিল না। সেখানে কোনো দরজা, দোকান কিছুই ছিল না। সেই মানসিক অবস্থায় যা করা সম্ভব তাই করলাম। আমি একটা ট্যাক্সি ডাকলাম।
I got in with Gip. "Dad!" Said Gip at last, "that was a proper magic shop!" Gip looked completely undamaged. He was neither scared, nor disturbed.There in his arms were four parcels containing items from the magic shop. Since then I have been up and down Regent Street several times looking for that shop. After all, I had not paid for the items.
জিপের সঙ্গে আমি উঠে বসলাম। শেষ পর্যন্ত জিপ বলল, “বাবা! ওটা একটা সত্যিকারের যাদুর দোকান!” জিপকে সম্পূর্ণ স্বাভাবিক লাগছিল। ও কোনোভাবে ভীত নয় বা অস্বস্তিতেও নেই। ওর হাতে ওই দোকান থেকে আনা চারটে মোড়ক ছিল যাতে ওখানকার জিনিস ছিল। তারপর থেকে আমি রিজেন্ট স্ট্রিটে বহুবার গেছি ওই দোকানটার খোঁজে। যদিও আমার তো ওই জিনিসগুলোর দাম মেটানো হয়নি।

Answer. On my way to school, there is a giftshop where I saw an interesting and strange object. It shaped like a pyramid but was colourless. I wondered if it was an ordinary solid shape or anything else. Then I entered the shop and asked the shopkeeper. He showed me that there was a switch under it. If I put it on a yellow light would be glowed within. It can be opened and there were two small mummies inside. I was amazed to see this.
আমার স্কুল যাওয়ার পথে একটি উপহারের দোকানে আমি একটি অদ্ভুত ও আগ্রহজনক জিনিস দেখেছিলাম। এটি আকারে একটি পিরামিডের মতো কিন্তু রংহীন। আমি ভাবলাম এটা কি একটা সাধারণ নিরেট আকৃতি নাকি অন্য কিছু। তারপর আমি দোকানে ঢুকলাম আর দোকানদারকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম। তিনি আমাকে দেখালেন জিনিসটার নীচের দিকে একটি সুইচ রয়েছে। যেটি টিপলে এর ভিতরে একটা হলুদ আলো বেরোয়। এটি খোলাও যায় এবং ভিতরে দুটি ছোটো মমি ছিল। আমি এটা দেখে বিস্মিত হলাম।

Answer. One of wishes that I want to be fulfilled is to go for trekking. It is risky but extremely adventurous. It is my dream to trek on peaks like Nandadevi, Phalut. My another wish is to study in Jawarharlal Nehru University. It is in Delhi and the finest university of India. One has to be hard working enough to get a chance here. I want these two wishes of mine to be fulfilled.
