There was once a toy clown called Tuffy. He lived in a toy shop with I many other toys. Tuffy longed to be a hero. He wanted to do something noble so that all the toys would cry out that he was a hero. He thought his little corner on the toy shelf was dull. 

একসময় একটা খেলনা ভাঁড় ছিল যার নাম টাফি। সে একটা খেলনার দোকানে অন্য অনেক খেলনার সঙ্গে থাকত। টাফি সবসময় একজন বীর হতে চাইত। সে এমন বড়ো কিছু করতে চাইত যাতে সব খেলনা চিৎকার করে বলে যে সে একজন বীর। সে মনে করত, খেলনার তাকের যে কোণাটায় সে থাকত সেটা খুবই নিস্তেজ ও মনমরা। 

"Why do you grumble so much?" asked Timothy, the puppy dog. "Be happy with us, Tuffy. Why do you want to go off and have adventures?" 

শিশু খেলনা কুকুর টিমোথি জিজ্ঞেস করল, “তুমি এত অভিযোগ কেন করো? আমাদের সঙ্গে খুশি থাকো, টাফি। তুমি কেন চলে যেতে চাও আর দুঃসাহস দেখাতে চাও ?”

"Adventures are always exciting. I want to do something that would make all the toys take notice of me. It's so dull up here on our shelf," replied Tuffy. 

টাফি উত্তর দিল, “অ্যাডভেনচার সব সময়ই খুব উত্তেজক। আমি এমন কিছু করতে চাই, যাতে সব খেলনা আমাকে লক্ষ করে। আমাদের তাকের এখানটা খুবই চুপচাপ।”

At night, the clown climbed down from his shelf to look for adventures. Now that night there was to be a grand race between two wooden horses and carts driven by wooden farmers. The race was just starting as Tuffy climbed down. One cart came racing by. The farmer riding it stood up and shouted! 

রাতে, ভাঁড়টি তার তাক থেকে নামল অ্যাডভেনচারের খোঁজে। সেই রাতে একটা বড়ো প্রতিযোগিতা ছিল দুটি কাঠের ঘোড়ার মধ্যে যেগুলি চালাবে কাঠের তৈরি চাষিরা। টাফি যখন নামল তখনই দৌড় শুরু হল। একটা গাড়ি দৌড়তে দৌড়তে এগোতে লাগল। যে চাষিটি এর ওপর রয়েছে সে উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে চিৎকার করল !

"Goodness! An adventure already! A runaway horse!" thought Tuffy. "Now is my chance to be a hero.

“দারুণ ! ইতিমধ্যেই একটা অ্যাডভেন্‌চার ! একটা ঘোড়া পালাচ্ছে ! এবার আমার বীর হওয়ার সুযোগ।” টাফি ভাবল।

" The horse and the cart came round again and Tuffy jumped at the reins. He held on to them and dragged the horse to one side. The cart turned over and the farmer fell down. Tuffy stood by, helping him up, feeling very proud that he had stopped the horse. 

ঘোড়া ও গাড়িটা আবার ঘুরে এলো এবং টাফি বলগাটার ওপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ল। সে সেগুলোকে ধরে আটকালো এবং ঘোড়াটাকে ঘষে টেনে একদিকে নিয়ে এলো। গাড়িটা উল্টে গেল এবং চাষিটি পড়ে গেল। টাফি তাকে সাহায্য করার জন্য পাশে এসে দাঁড়াল, সে ঘোড়াটাকে আটকাতে পেরেছে বলে খুবই গর্বিত বোধ করছিল।

But the farmer was terribly angry. 

কিন্তু চাষিটি সাংঘাতিক রেগে গিয়েছিল।

"What do you mean by spoiling my race like that?" he shouted. "Now the other horse and cart will win! You silly, little clown!" 

সে চিৎকার করে উঠলো, “আমার দৌড়টা নষ্ট করার মানে কী? এখন অন্য ঘোড়া আর গাড়ি জিতে যাবে! বোকা ছোটো ভাঁড় !”

Tully was upset. "You don't understand I'm a hero!" He ran out and sat down in a toy farm wiping his tears. Suddenly Tuffy noticed a doll's house in a corner of the shop. He saw smoke coming out of one of the windows. "Fire! Fire!" shouted Tuffy. "Another adventure! I'll put it out at once." 

টাফির মন খারাপ হল। “তুমি বুঝলে না আমি একজন বীর !” সে দৌড়ে চলে গেল ও একটা খেলনা খামারবাড়িতে বসে চোখের জল মুছছিল। হঠাৎ টাফি লক্ষ করলো দোকানের কোণায় একটা পুতুলের বাড়িকে। সে দেখল একটা জানলা থেকে ধোঁয়া বেরিয়ে আসছে। টাফি চিৎকার করে উঠল, “আগুন! আগুন! আরেকটা অ্যাডভেনচার ! আমি এখুনি এটাকে নিভিয়ে দেবো।”

He found a ladder and put it up against the wall of the doll's house. Then he took a big bucket, filled it with water from the farm pond. He climbed the ladder and threw all the water in at the window. Just then, someone caught him by the collar and roared, "And what do you think you're doing playing a silly trick like that?"

সে একটা মই জোগাড় করলো ও পুতুলের বাড়ির দেওয়ালে এটা রাখলো। তারপর সে একটা বড়ো বালতি নিল ও খামারের পুকুর থেকে জল ভরতি করলো। মই বেয়ে উঠে সে সমস্ত জলটা জানলার দিকে ছুঁড়ে দিল। ঠিক সেই সময় কেউ তার কলারটা ধরল ও গর্জন করে বললো, “কী মনে করে তুমি এই বোকা কাজটা করলে?”

Poor Tuffy was shaken like a rat. "Don't do that!" he shouted. "I am a hero! I was putting out the fire." Tuffy saw that he was speaking to a sailor doll who was making porridge. "Can't I cook in peace without you coming and throwing water at me?"

টাফি একটা ইঁদুরের মতো কেঁপে উঠল। সে চিৎকার করল, “এটা কোরো না! আমি একজন বীর! আমি আগুনটা নেভাচ্ছিলাম।” টাফি দেখল সে একটা নাবিক পুতুলের সঙ্গে কথা বলছে যে জই-এর পায়েস বানাচ্ছিল। “তোমার এই জল ছোঁড়া ছাড়া কী আমি শান্তিতে রান্না করতে পারব না ? ”

"They won't let me be a hero," he sobbed. Soon after, he heard a cry and looked around. There was a big bowl of water nearby. In it were swimming two fine goldfish. And there was a small doll too! 

সে ফুঁপিয়ে উঠে বলল, “ওরা আমাকে বীর হতে দেবে না।” একটু পরেই সে একটা চিৎকার শুনল ও চারদিকে তাকাল। কাছেই একটা বড়ো বাটিতে জল রয়েছে। এতে ঐ দুটো সোনালি মাছ সাধার কাটছিল। আর সেখানে একটা ছোটো পুতুলও রয়েছে।

"She's fallen in! I'll rescue her! This is a real adventure at last!" 

“ও পড়ে গেছে। আমি ওকে উদ্ধার করব। শেষ পর্যন্ত এটা একটা সত্যিকারের অ্যাডভেনচার। "

He caught hold of a little net and dipped it into the water. He brought the little doll out. But she slipped out and fell on to the table banging her head.

সে একটা ছোটো জাল নিল ও সেটাকে জলে ডোবালো। ছোটো পুতুলটিকে সে টেনে বার করল। কিন্তু সে পিছলে বেরিয়ে টেবিলে গিয়ে পড়ল ও তার মাথা ঠুকে গেল।

She began to cry. Up came a policeman doll and said fiercely, "What are you doing, catching the doll and making her bump her head like that?"

সে কাঁদতে শুরু করল। একটা পুলিশ পুতুল এসে রেগে বলল, “কী করছ তুমি? পুতুলটিকে ধরে তার মাথাটা ওইভাবে ঠুকে দিল?”

"I was saving her from drowning!" said Tuffy.

টাফি বলল, “আমি ওকে ডুবে যাওয়া থেকে বাঁচালাম।”

"I was having such a lovely swim!" sobbed the little doll. "I swim with the goldfish every night. But that clown caught me in a nasty net and spoilt my fun. He isn't a hero at all !"

ছোটো পুতুলটি ফুঁপিয়ে উঠে বলল, “আমি কী সুন্দর সাঁতার কাটছিলাম। রোজ রাতে আমি সোনালিমাছের সঙ্গে সাঁতার কাটি। কিন্তু ওই ভাঁড় আমাকে একটা বিচ্ছিরি জালে আমাকে ধরল ও আমার মজাটা নষ্ট করল। ও মোটেই কোনো ধীর নয়।"

The policeman locked Tuffy in a room in the police station. Suddenly he heard a noise outside the window of the room. "Tuffy, Tuffy!" barked a little voice. "It is I, Timothy. Here is the key to the door."

পুলিশটি টাফিকে পুলিশ স্টেশনে নিয়ে গিয়ে একটা ঘরে তালা দিয়ে আটকে দিলো। হঠাৎ টাফি ঘরের জানলার বাইরে একটা ডাক শুনল। একটা ধীর গলার স্বর তাকে ডাকছিল, “টাফি। টাফি। এটা আমি, টিমোথি, এই নাও দরজার চাবি।”

Tinkle! The key fell to the floor and the clown quickly unlocked the door. Timothy and he ran off together and climbed up to the shelf.

ঠিং চাবিটা মেঝেতে পাড়ল ও ভাঁড়টা তক্ষুণি দরজাটা খুলে ফেলল। টিমোথি ও সে একসঙ্গে দৌড়ে তাকের ওপর উঠে গেল।

"Thank you. You're the hero!" he said. "I didn't stop to think. But you saw I was in real trouble and you saved me." The toy dog blushed.

টাফি বলল, “ধন্যবাদ, তুমি সত্যিই বীর! আমি কিছু না ভেবেই কাজ করেছি। কিন্তু তুমি দেখেছিলে আমি সত্যি একটা সমস্যায় আছি এবং তুমি আমাকে বাঁচিয়েছিলে।” খেলনা কুকুরটি লজ্জায় লাল হয়ে গেল।

"Oh! How peaceful it is up here. I'll never want to leave this shelf again.

“ওহ ! এই জায়গাটা কী শান্তির। আমি এই তাকটা ছেড়ে আর কখনো যেতে চাই না।”

"And, until he was sold, he never did!

এবং বিক্রি হওয়ার আগে পর্যন্ত সে আর কোথাও যায়নি।

They can hear the sound of rippling of the water. In the either side of the river there is dark forest. The forest looks mysterious in moonlight. They are thrilled by atmosphere of the night.

Answer. Last night I spent with Tuffy in the toy shop. Initially he was talking about his wishes. Then he tried different things to prove his heroism. He made a mess of playing of a group of toys. He made a little doll scared. He was scolded by everyone. I tried to prevent him.
