John Keats
Life and Works of the Writer : John Keats was born on October 31, 1795, in Moorfields, London. He came from a comfortable trade background. Keats lost his father Thomas Keats, manager of a livery stable, in his childhood. Keats' mother, Frances died in 1810 of Tuberculosis. Anyway, Keats got a huge amount of money from his grandmother. But unfortunately, he could not enjoy it fully. This proved that Keats was not from absolutely poor family background. Keats along with his brother George studied at Enfield Academy from 1803 to 1811. Keats was fairly tutored there. He was a very serious student. He had a life-long interest in classical mythology. He was an avid reader of Spenser and Milton. Anyway, Keats left school and worked as an apprentice to an apothecary (chemist). He pursued the career of a surgeon for some time.

But the poet in him did not like the career-long. It was really a mental dilemma for Keats. But Keats chose poetry and started writing poems one after another. Keats has been deeply influenced by some stalwarts of the age. Among them were Hazlitt, Coleridge, Charles Lamb, P. B. Shelley, and most notably Leigh Hunt. Keats had developed a passionate love for Fanny to it, was Browne. But the lady did not like her lover. It was a great shock to delicate nature. Added carping criticism of the Quarterly and The Reviews about his poetic power. All these dampened his spirit. But Keats went on singing his romantic songs through his lovely odes, sonnets, and other lyrical verses. Keats was a pure poet. To him, poetry was a world of imagination.

He sought beauty. He worshipped beauty with his five senses. An impassioned singer of beauty Keats created some finest poems in English literature. His 'Endymion', Hyperion', etc. have ineffable charm. His lyrical poems 'Ode to Nightingale', ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn', 'Ode to Autumn' are the remarkable achievements of his poetic career. But Keats' Letters is a work of infinite charm. It portrays anything and everything in his poetry, art, and philosophy. This great romantic poet died of tuberculosis, a family disease in Rome, his second home, on Feb. 23, 1822. To sum up, men may come, men may go, but the earthly poetry of Keats will never be dead.
